The Empty Cup

Only those who empty themselves can receive what is new. Zen Story: A professor visits a master. The master pours tea and does not stop as the cup overflows. You are like this cup—too full for what is new.

The Empty Cup
Settle yourself comfortably. Feel how your body comes to rest. Take one deep breath in. And out. Once more. And with this exhale, let go of everything you have gathered today. It is time for an old story. A story about emptiness. A famous professor set out on a long journey to visit a Zen master. He had read many books, given countless lectures, was full of knowledge and theories. When he arrived, the master bowed politely and invited him inside. They sat on simple mats in a plain room. The professor began speaking immediately. He told of his studies, his insights into Eastern philosophy, his theories about enlightenment. The master listened in silence. Then he stood up and fetched a teapot and two cups. Without saying a word, he began pouring tea for the professor. The cup filled. The tea rose to the brim. But the master did not stop. The hot tea spilled over the edge, onto the table, dripped onto the floor. The professor jumped up. Excitedly he cried out: "Master! The cup is full! It is overflowing! Stop!" Then the master paused. He looked at the professor calmly. His voice was gentle, but clear: "Yes, exactly like you." The professor fell silent. The master continued: "You are like this cup. So full of your own thoughts and opinions that there is no room for anything new. How can I teach you about Zen when your cup is already overflowing?" In the silence that followed, the professor understood. All his knowledge had made him closed off. His certainties had become walls. For the first time in years, he was truly silent. And in this silence, he felt something he had almost forgotten: emptiness. Space for the unknown. Breathe with me in. And out. Imagine you could empty your own cup. With each exhale, you let go of something. An opinion, a certainty, a judgment. Breathe in. And out. How does this emptiness feel? Is there fear? Or perhaps... a strange relief? This emptiness is not a lack. It is possibility. Space for what wishes to come. One last conscious breath. Only those who become empty can receive what is new. Only those who become empty can receive what is new. This is the paradox of learning, of growing, of living. Take this thought with you into your day. Whenever you notice your cup is overflowing with certainties, remember it. Sometimes the most valuable thing we can do is to empty, not to fill. Take one more deep breath in and out. Gently open your eyes. Thank you for these minutes we shared. Thank you for using Calm Sessions.
