The Invisible Moon

Everything has its season – darkness is part of it too. The moon doesn't disappear at the new moon. It's simply not visible. Your darkness is also just a phase.

The Invisible Moon
Get comfortable and let your shoulders drop. Take a deep breath in and exhale with a sigh. Once more, very consciously. Today we look to the moon. Not the one standing in the sky, but the one that works within us. The story of phases that come and go. Maria sits on her terrace and stares into the black sky. New moon. Nothing to see. "Where is it?", asks her five-year-old niece Lisa, who is visiting. "The moon is gone." Maria smiles. "No, it's not gone. It's just invisible." Lisa furrows her brow. "How can something exist and still be invisible?" A good question. Maria thinks about her last month. The time after the separation, when she felt like she had disappeared. Like she was no longer there. "You know," she says to Lisa, "the moon does this every month. It becomes thinner and thinner until we can no longer see it. But it's still there. The moon is gathering its strength." Lisa nods seriously. "Like a battery charging?" "Exactly like a battery." Three days later, Lisa calls excitedly. "Aunt Maria! The moon is back! Very thin, but it's there!" Maria steps out the door and sees the thin crescent in the sky. She thinks about how she laughed for the first time in weeks yesterday. Really laughed. Over a silly joke on the radio. Maybe she was never really gone. Maybe she was just gathering. Strength, clarity, a new way of seeing. Two weeks later it's a full moon. Lisa stands on the terrace again and marvels. "It became so huge!" Maria nods. "But you know what? In two weeks it will disappear again. And that's completely okay." "Because it knows it will come back?" "Because disappearing is part of it. Like breathing is part of us." Let us stay with this thought for a moment. Breathe in and imagine you are taking in light. Breathe out and let in darkness. Once more. In for the visible, out for the hidden. Where in your life do you feel invisible right now? Not disappeared. Just in a different phase. The moon doesn't fight its darkness. It trusts its cycle. What if you could trust yours? Breathe in this possibility. The moon doesn't disappear at new moon. It's just not visible. The moon doesn't disappear at new moon. It's just not visible. Your darkness is also just a phase. Take this thought with you into your day, into your night, into your next invisible time. Breathe in deeply once more and come back. Open your eyes, if they were closed. Thank you for these shared minutes. Thank you for using Calm Sessions.
