The Paper Bridge

Some supports don't deliver what they promise. A man builds a bridge made of paper across a chasm. It looks stable, but with each step it tears further. The cigarette as stress management is a paper bridge. It's time to build a real one.

The Paper Bridge
```xml Get comfortable and close your eyes. Let your body sink into the chair or sofa. Take one deep breath in... and out again. Once more in... and out. Today I will tell you about a man who built a very unusual bridge. A story about what carries us – and what only seems to. Once upon a time, there was a man standing before a deep chasm. The valley was so deep that he could not see the bottom. On the other side lay everything he wished for: a green garden, a warm house, people who laughed. The man had paper with him, lots of paper. White sheets, newspapers, even a few colorful pages from magazines. "I will build myself a bridge," he said to himself. He folded and glued, rolled and interlaced the sheets together. Hour after hour he worked. The bridge grew longer and longer. From a distance it looked impressive – like a white arch spanning across the chasm. Finally it was done. The man stepped to the edge and examined his work. The bridge felt... well, thin. But it was there. That would have to be enough. He took his first step. The paper bent, but it held. "You see," he murmured, "it works." The second step. A soft tearing sound could be heard, but the bridge still carried him. Breathe with me: in... and out. The third step. Now the first sheet tore. Then the second. With each step the bridge grew weaker. The man felt it, but he told himself it was fine: "It will still hold. I've already come so far." But with each step another piece ripped away. The paper beneath his feet became thinner and thinner. He began to sweat. His hands trembled. "Just a few more steps," he whispered to himself. But deep in his heart he knew: This bridge would not carry him. It was an illusion. A hope made of paper. Let us pause for a moment. Breathe with me deeply in... and let the air slowly flow out again. Do you feel your breath? It is real. It carries you. Think of the man's paper bridge. And ask yourself gently: What paper bridges have you built in your life? What promises you support but actually makes you weaker? Breathe in again... and out. It is okay if you recognize such bridges. That is the first step toward building real ones. Some supports do not deliver what they promise. Some supports do not deliver what they promise. The man in the story could have gathered wood. Or stacked stone upon stone. It would have taken longer, but the bridge would have been real. Take this thought with you into your day: What takes time, but truly carries you? Take one more deep breath in... and slowly open your eyes. Thank you for these shared minutes. Thank you for using Calm Sessions. ```
